Most blogs fail not because the writing is bad, but because there’s no strategy behind it. Random topics, inconsistent publishing, and no connection between articles mean Google never sees your site as an authority on anything.
A content strategy fixes this. Here’s how to build one that actually drives traffic.
What a Content Strategy Actually Is
A content strategy answers four questions:
- What topics do I cover? (Content pillars)
- What specific articles do I write? (Content plan)
- In what order do I publish them? (Editorial calendar)
- How do articles connect to each other? (Internal linking)
Everything else is execution.
Step 1: Define Your Content Pillars
Content pillars are the 3-5 core topics your blog covers. They should be:
- Broad enough to support 20+ articles each
- Narrow enough to establish expertise
- Connected to products or services you can monetize
Example: A Creator Tools Blog
| Pillar | Example Topics | Monetization |
|---|---|---|
| AI Writing Tools | Tool reviews, comparisons, tutorials | Affiliate commissions |
| SEO for Creators | Keyword research, on-page SEO, link building | Course sales, consulting |
| Monetization | Digital products, affiliates, sponsorships | Coaching, templates |
Example: A Fitness Blog
| Pillar | Example Topics | Monetization |
|---|---|---|
| Home Workouts | Equipment reviews, routines, form guides | Amazon affiliates |
| Nutrition | Meal plans, supplements, recipes | Cookbook, sponsorships |
| Recovery | Sleep, stretching, injury prevention | Product affiliates |
How to Validate Your Pillars
For each pillar, check:
- Search demand: Use Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to verify people search for these topics
- Competition level: Are existing results from massive sites, or can a new blog compete?
- Your expertise: Can you write 20+ articles on this topic without running out of things to say?
- Monetization path: Is there a clear way to make money from this content?
If a pillar fails any of these checks, replace it.
Step 2: Build Keyword Clusters
A keyword cluster groups related keywords under one pillar topic. Each cluster becomes a mini content hub on your site.
Cluster Structure
Pillar page: Broad topic overview (e.g., “Best AI Writing Tools”) Cluster articles: Specific subtopics that link back to the pillar page
Example cluster for “AI Writing Tools”:
Pillar: Best AI Writing Tools (targets: "best AI writing tools")
├── Jasper AI Review (targets: "Jasper AI review")
├── Copy.ai Review (targets: "Copy.ai review")
├── ChatGPT for Blog Writing (targets: "how to use ChatGPT for blogging")
├── Jasper vs Copy.ai (targets: "Jasper vs Copy.ai")
├── AI Writing Tools Pricing Guide (targets: "AI writing tools pricing")
└── How to Edit AI-Generated Content (targets: "how to edit AI content")
Why Clusters Work
Google evaluates topical authority. A site with 15 articles about AI writing tools — all interlinked — ranks better for “best AI writing tools” than a site with one article about AI writing and one article about cooking and one about travel.
Building Your First Cluster
- Start with the pillar keyword (e.g., “best AI writing tools”)
- Use Google autocomplete — type the keyword and see what Google suggests
- Check “People Also Ask” — these become FAQ sections or standalone articles
- Use keyword research tools — Ahrefs, SEMrush, or free alternatives like Ubersuggest
- Map out 8-15 articles that support the pillar topic

Step 3: Prioritize What to Write First
Not all articles have equal impact. Prioritize using this framework:
The Priority Matrix
| Priority | Type | Example | Why First |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Money pages | Tool reviews with affiliate links | Revenue from day one |
| 2 | Pillar pages | “Best X Tools” roundups | High traffic potential |
| 3 | Supporting articles | How-to tutorials | Drive traffic to money pages |
| 4 | Comparison pages | “X vs Y” articles | Capture decision-stage traffic |
| 5 | Opinion/thought leadership | Industry analysis, predictions | Build authority and backlinks |
First 30 Days: Publish These
- 3 pillar pages (one per content pillar)
- 5 money pages (product reviews with affiliate links)
- 4 how-to tutorials (supporting content that links to pillar pages)
This gives you 12 articles covering your core topics, an internal linking structure, and immediate monetization potential.
Step 4: Create an Editorial Calendar
An editorial calendar isn’t just “publish dates.” It’s a production system.
90-Day Planning Cycle
Month 1: Foundation
- Publish pillar pages for each content pillar
- Write 2-3 supporting articles per pillar
- Set up internal linking between all articles
Month 2: Depth
- Add comparison and “vs” articles
- Write detailed product reviews
- Start link building to pillar pages
Month 3: Expansion
- Fill gaps in keyword clusters
- Update month-1 articles based on performance data
- Plan the next 90-day cycle based on what worked
Weekly Publishing Schedule
| Day | Activity |
|---|---|
| Monday | Keyword research + outline for this week’s article |
| Tuesday-Wednesday | Write the article |
| Thursday | Edit, add images, optimize for SEO |
| Friday | Publish + promote on social media |
| Weekend | Rest (or batch outline next week’s content) |

Step 5: Mix Content Types
Different content types serve different purposes. A healthy blog has a mix:
Content Type Mix
| Type | % of Content | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| How-to tutorials | 35% | Drive search traffic | “How to Add Subtitles to Videos” |
| Tool reviews/comparisons | 25% | Drive affiliate revenue | “CapCut vs DaVinci Resolve” |
| List posts/roundups | 20% | Attract backlinks, high traffic | “10 Best AI Video Tools” |
| Opinion/analysis | 10% | Build authority | “Why AI Won’t Replace Writers” |
| Case studies | 10% | Prove expertise | “How I Grew to 50K Monthly Readers” |
Why This Mix Works
- How-to content is the most consistently searched content type — “how to do X” searches never stop
- Reviews and comparisons capture people ready to buy — highest conversion rate
- List posts attract backlinks because they’re easy to reference from other articles
- Opinion pieces get shared on social media and differentiate you from AI-generated content
- Case studies prove you know what you’re talking about (E-E-A-T)
Step 6: Internal Linking Strategy
Internal links are the glue. They tell Google which pages matter most and help readers find related content.
Linking Rules
- Every article links to its pillar page. Always.
- Pillar pages link to all cluster articles. Both directions.
- Related articles link to each other. Comparisons link to individual reviews. Tutorials link to tool recommendations.
- Use descriptive anchor text. “See our guide to keyword research” — NOT “click here.”
- Add links in the first 200 words when possible. Early internal links pass more authority.
Internal Linking Audit
Every 90 days, check:
- Do all new articles link back to pillar pages?
- Are there orphan pages (articles with no internal links pointing to them)?
- Are your highest-value pages receiving the most internal links?
Measuring What Works
After 90 days, you have enough data to evaluate. Track these metrics:
| Metric | Tool | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Organic traffic per article | Google Analytics | Which topics get searched |
| Average position per keyword | Google Search Console | Where you rank |
| Click-through rate | Google Search Console | Whether your titles work |
| Affiliate clicks/conversions | Affiliate dashboards | What makes money |
| Bounce rate | Google Analytics | Whether content matches intent |
Act on the data:
- Articles ranking 5-15? Optimize them — they’re close to page 1.
- Articles with high impressions but low CTR? Improve the title and meta description.
- Articles with zero traffic after 6 months? Consider merging with a related article or rewriting.
