A mockup turns a flat digital file into a product that looks real. Whether you’re selling an ebook, launching an app, promoting merchandise, or showcasing a website design, mockups make it tangible — and buyers respond to tangible.

Detailed Reviews

Smartmockups — Best for Digital Product Creators

Smartmockups (owned by Canva) is the fastest way to create professional product mockups. Upload your image, choose a scene, and download in seconds.

What’s good:

  • Dead simple interface — no learning curve
  • 200+ free mockups (no watermark)
  • Direct integration with Canva designs
  • Categories: devices, apparel, print, packaging, mugs, social media
  • Batch processing — apply one design to multiple mockups at once
  • Export in multiple sizes (social media, web, print)

What’s not great:

  • Pro required for the best scenes ($14/month)
  • No animation or 3D rotation
  • Scene customization is limited (can’t change backgrounds on most)

Best for: Creators selling digital products (courses, ebooks, templates, printables) who need quick, professional mockups for sales pages and social media.

Placeit — Best for Merchandise and Video

Placeit has the largest library of mockup templates — over 50,000 — covering everything from t-shirts and phone cases to book covers and YouTube intros.

What’s good:

  • Massive template library (50,000+)
  • Video mockups (animated product scenes)
  • T-shirt and merch mockups are the best in the industry
  • Logo mockup options (embossed, foil, neon)
  • Includes a design tool (logo maker, t-shirt designer)
  • All downloads include commercial license

What’s not great:

  • Individual downloads cost $7.95 each (subscription is better value)
  • Interface can feel cluttered with so many options
  • Search can be inconsistent — browse categories instead

Pricing:

  • Individual download: $7.95 per mockup
  • Unlimited subscription: $7.47/month (billed annually)
  • Unlimited subscription: $14.95/month (billed monthly)

Best for: E-commerce creators, print-on-demand sellers, and anyone needing merchandise mockups.

Artboard Studio — Best for Custom and Animated Mockups

Artboard Studio is more of a design tool than a simple mockup generator. You can arrange 3D objects, change lighting, add shadows, and create animated mockup sequences.

What’s good:

  • Customizable 3D scenes (change angles, lighting, background)
  • Animated mockups (GIF and video export)
  • Layer-based editor (similar to Photoshop)
  • Great for hero images and landing page banners
  • Team collaboration features

What’s not great:

  • Steeper learning curve than Smartmockups/Placeit
  • Smaller template library (3,000 vs. 50,000)
  • Free tier is fairly limited

Best for: Designers and creators who want full creative control over mockup scenes.

Shots.so — Best for App and Web Screenshots

Shots.so specializes in making app screenshots and web browser mockups look beautiful. Drop in a screenshot, and it wraps it in a phone frame, browser window, or minimal mockup scene.

What’s good:

  • Clean, modern aesthetic
  • Browser and device frames look premium
  • Background gradients and patterns included
  • One-time payment option ($29 lifetime)

What’s not great:

  • Limited to screens and devices (no merch or print mockups)
  • Smaller template library
  • Not suitable for physical product mockups

Best for: SaaS founders, app developers, and anyone showcasing digital interfaces.

Canva — Best for Existing Canva Users

Canva’s mockup feature lets you apply your Canva designs directly into mockup scenes without leaving the platform.

How it works:

  1. Design your graphic in Canva
  2. Click “Smartmockups” in the left sidebar
  3. Select a mockup scene
  4. Your design is automatically applied
  5. Download or add to your Canva design

What’s good:

  • Seamless workflow for Canva users
  • No export/import — design and mockup in one tool
  • Smartmockups integration included
  • Works on free and Pro plans

What’s not great:

  • Smaller mockup library than standalone tools
  • Less customization than Artboard Studio
  • Some of the best mockups require Canva Pro

Tips for Better Mockups

Do’s

  1. Match the mockup context to your audience. Selling to tech professionals? Use clean desk + MacBook mockups. Selling to crafters? Use cozy, lifestyle scenes.

  2. Use consistent mockup styles. If your sales page shows 5 product images, use the same mockup style/series for all of them. Mismatched mockup styles look chaotic.

  3. Show the product in use. A phone mockup in someone’s hand converts better than a phone floating in space. Action shots > flat shots.

  4. Optimize for the platform. Instagram carousel mockups need to look great at mobile size. Website hero mockups need to work at full desktop width.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t use low-resolution source images. Garbage in = garbage out. Your uploaded design should be at least the resolution of the mockup scene.

  2. Don’t overcrowd. One product per mockup scene. If you need to show multiple features, use a carousel or multi-image layout.

  3. Don’t use mockups as your only product images. Mix mockups with actual screenshots, GIFs, and demo videos for a more authentic feel.
